MCCU announces results of public opinion poll on Egyptian media's coverage of the COP 27 in presence of media practitioners


The Public Opinion Research Center at the Faculty of Mass Communication, Cairo University, organized this afternoon, under the auspices of Dr. Mohamed Othman Elkhosht, President of the University, and the supervision of Dr. Hanan Junaid, Dean of the Faculty of Mass Communication, a webinar in the faculty's conference hall, to announce the results of an opinion poll on the Egyptian media's coverage of the Climate Summit Conference COP27, in the presence of college professors and editors-in-chief of a number of governmental and private newspapers and websites.

Dr. Hanan Gunaid, Dean of the Faculty of Mass Communication, Cairo University presented the results of the survey conducted by the Public Opinion Research Center which indicate that all media outlets, including the results, reflected all the truth about the media’s dealings with traditional media and social media, and how they follow-up vital and national issues, and that the results also reflected how the Egyptian woman was the largest representative in the results of the show for the category of audiences that cared about the issue of climate change, and that the private and governmental satellite channels were a distinguishing mark in the useful vital coverage on the issue of climate change, and that the largest percentage of the sample of the study confirmed its vision of the importance of holding the Climate Conference (COP 27) in Egypt, in order to identify the causes of climate change crises and try to remedy them.


Dr. Hanan Gunaid, said that the Public Opinion Research Center conducted an opinion poll aimed at monitoring the role of the Egyptian media in providing the Egyptian public with information and news about the COP27 Climate Summit, noting that the results revealed by the poll, most notably: the multiplicity and diversity of issues that the respondents were keen to follow up during the conference, among them came the issue of water scarcity and drought, where it came in first place, then the issue of green policy, then the issue of financing that rich countries will provide to poor countries in order to face the effects of climate change, then renewable energy and energy transfer.

In turn, Dr. Sahar Mostafa, Director of the Center for Public Opinion Research, said that the results of the survey showed a high evaluation of the respondents for Egypt's efforts in organizing the COP27, as most of the sample's evaluations ranged between excellent and very good, pointing out that the survey monitored the multiplicity and diversity of the media through which the respondents followed COP27 Climate Summit Conference, and social media came at the forefront of these means, which ranked first with a rate of 84.3%, followed by electronic news sites in second place, then television channels, then websites of official institutions, then radio stations and newspapers.


The Director of the Public Opinion Research Center indicated that the results showed that the social network site Facebook came as the most reliable site for respondents to obtain information and news about the Climate Summit, explaining that the opinion poll was applied to a sample of 1,500 individuals from the media audience. Those whose ages ranged from 15 years and over, from November 17 to December 19, 2022.

The page of the Presidency of the Republic on the social network site won the first place in providing the public with information about the Climate Summit Conference (Cop 27) in the opinion poll, followed by the page of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers on Facebook, in second place. While the Ministry of Environment's website page on the social media platform came in third place, according to the announced results.

And on the side of the national newspapers, "Al-Ahram newspaper" won the first place among the national newspapers in providing the public with information about Cop 27, then Al-Gumhuriya newspaper in the second place.

The officials of the private newspapers also received certificates of appreciation and honors according to the announced results, Akram Al-Qassas, Editor-in-Chief of Al-Youm7 website, was honored by Faculty Shield of Honor, as Al-Youm7 newspaper won the first place among private newspapers in providing the public with information about Cop 27 in the opinion poll organized by the Center for Public Opinion Research and Studies at the Faculty of Mass Communication, Cairo University. Al-Masry Al-Youm website also ranked second among private newspapers in providing the public with information about the Climate Summit.

The Faculty Dean Dr. Hanan Gunaid handed Certificates of appreciation and shields of honor for the Egyptian government TV channels represented by the Egyptian satellite channel, and on the side of the private channels, each of the DMC channels got the first place among the satellite channels in providing the public with information about Cop 27 followed by MBC channel, then the Cairo news channel in second place at the level of the best news channel in coverage of the climate conference event in Sharm El-Sheikh.

Dr. Hanan Gunaid, and Dr. Sahar Mostafa, Director of the Public Opinion Research Center, handed Shield of Honor, and Certificate of Appreciation to Mr Alaa Al-Ghatarifi, Director of the Multimedia Department at Masrawy website, for obtaining the first place among the news sites, then Cairo 24 website in the second place, and Al-Bawaba News website in the third place among the private news sites in providing the public with information about the Climate Summit.

And at the level of the results of the media professionals who are most followed by the public in the framework of the climate issue event in Sharm El-Sheikh, the journalist Amr Adib won the first place in providing the public with information about the Climate Summit Conference (Cop 27) in the opinion poll organized by the Center for Public Opinion Research and Studies at the Faculty of Mass Communication, Cairo University then the presenter, Ramy Radwan, who won the second place.

The results of the announced survey indicated that (Nogoom FM Radio) won the first place among the most followed radio stations during Egypt's hosting of the Climate Summit in Sharm El-Sheikh.

Dr. Sahar Mostafa indicated that the Opinion Research Center was established in 1982 as a scientific, research, training and advisory unit, with the aim of conducting scientific studies and research on political, economic and social issues related to Egyptian society, measuring public opinion trends towards current vital issues, and exchanging scientific opinions through holding conferences and seminars. And specialized workshops, and developing job skills for research cadres in the field of public opinion.

Prof. Dr. Khaled Salah, professor at the Department of Radio and Television at the Faculty and member of the Public Opinion Research Center, expressed his great pleasure in participating in announcing the results of the Public Opinion Research Center survey regarding the coverage of the Climate Summit, indicating that the results reflected the amount of interest in the impact of social media, and the need to conduct a lot of research in the field of the effects of these new media on the public's knowledge and information about issues and current societal affairs, noting that climate change is a thorny file and at the top of the research priorities to address the extent of the collective public awareness about those issues that are related to the crisis of daily life among people, explaining that the results of public opinion research need more expansion and more application because of the possibility of presenting a forward-looking vision of the current situation regarding societal issues and sounding the alarm on them.

At the end of the ceremony, the attendees took memorial photos accompanied by the honoring platform, and congratulated the honorees from the audience representing the media outlets being honored, according to the results of the survey.
