"Cairo Mass Comm." discusses effects of digital platforms on cultural identity

Faculty of Mass Communication, Cairo University, organized a research session entitled "Digital Platforms and Their Impacts", as part of the activities of the twenty-eighth international conference of the faculty, under the auspices of Dr. Mohamed Othman Elkhosht, President of the University. Researcher Mohamed Mahmoud, a lecturer of radio and television at the Department of Media at the Faculty of Arts, New Valley University, in cooperation with researcher Hala Hamdy, a lecturer at the Department of Journalism at the Al-Jazeera Institute for Media and Communication Sciences, presented their research idea under the title "The Egyptian public`s solicitation of information from press and television content via digital platforms."  In light of the knowledge economy, and the results of the study reached a clear increase in the use of digital platforms, and the confidence of the study sample in digital platforms reached 90.5%, and this is due to the platforms’ keenness to display pictures, videos, and discussions on various topics.

The researcher recommended the need to pay attention to the digital media industry in modern societies in light of the new digital economy orientation.


Rufaida Muhammad, Assistant Lecturer at the International Academy of Engineering and Media Sciences, reviewed her research on "the role of parents in consolidating the media culture of children through their use of digital platforms." It was found that the largest follow-up rate was for cartoon programs, and then series,The researcher recommended the need for parental control and the promotion of media culture among parents and children.


Amal Ismail, a lecturer at the Department of Audiovisual Media at the Canadian Higher Institute of Modern Media Technology, touched on her research idea on “the image of the Egyptian family in the drama of Arab platforms and its relationship to the problem of cultural identity.” She concluded that the family in platform drama reflects a different image of the nature of the Egyptian family, as it tends to express more about the West.


The researcher Asmaa Al-Musli, a lecturer at the Faculty of Languages and Media at the Arab Academy for Research and Technology, reviewed her topic on “Infotainment: Presenting News Through Social Media Platforms”, during which she talked about the use of memes in presenting news content, and it was found that about 44% of the news that the researcher analyzed was about Memes, and this form requires more knowledge from the audience about the origin of the images and expressions used by the content provider.


In her turn, Dr. Naglaa Mohamed Hamed, a teacher at the Department of Radio and Television at the Faculty of Mass Communication, Cairo University, presented her research on “The Foundations of Arab Cultural Identity in the Original Production Drama of Digital Platforms: An Analytical Study on the Shahid and Netflix Platforms,” and indicated that the values of citizenship and belonging were absent from soap operas Which is shown on the Shahid and Netflix platforms, while the market values prevailed and attracted attention with scenes of drinking alcohol, nudity, and the call to abandon the family entity, and others.

Commenting on the research, Dr. Khaled Salah El-Din, a professor at the Department of Radio and Television, Faculty of Mass Communication, Cairo University, said that “science is the locomotive of progress.” Then he touched on drama studies, which should move away from some methodological tools such as paths of proof and active forces, because Drama depends mainly on imagination, and he also talked about the need to ensure the theoretical framework and its close connection to the subject of research.


He added that the main reason for our inability to build an accumulation of Arabic knowledge is the inaccuracy and unification of visions in the right direction, and that researchers should not be deceived by new terms and adopt them in their research without scrutinizing their meaning.


Dr. Hammad Ibrahim, a lecturer at the Department of Journalism, Faculty of Mass Communication, Cairo University, emphasized that researchers should not bet on quantity while neglecting quality, and that researchers should not monitor mistakes, but rather build and develop on what they say.
